Business Letter 1. 结合课题任务情况，查阅文献资料，撰写1400-2000个左右英文单词的文献综述 Survey of studies This paper is aimed to do research on English business letter translation with the help of the skopostheory. The German translation scholar Christiane Nord in his work Translating as a Purposeful Activity:Functionalist Approaches Explained described Functionalism’s forming process, basic statement and basic theory. in this book provides a theoretical theory for my thesis. It is Skopostheory. Skopostheory is an approach to translation which was developed in Germany in the late 1970s (Vermeer 1978). And which reflects a general shift from predominantly LINGUISTIC and rather formal translation theories to a more functionally and socioculturally oriented concept of translation. As acknowledged by translation theorists and proved by translation practice that most theories have practical significance. However ,due to the limitation of theories and uniqueness of translation, no single translation theory can neatly summarize the various genres and solve all the problems in the field of translation. The functional theory is a great breakaway from the traditional idea of translation.the representatives,Katharina Reiss,Hans J. Vermeer, Justa Holz-Manttari and Christiane Nord, are all German scholars,whom we call “German school of 6

functionalism”(Nord, 2001:4).Each one represents a stage of the development of modern functionalism in translation studies and makes a great contribution to the world. Skopostheory was introduced into China around the 1990s,almost 20 years later than its appearance, and the main researches on it were carried on after the year 1999,since then there are lots of academic articles coming out discussing the Skopostheory from various aspects. In spite of these theoretical and applied researches on the Skopostheory and lots publications, the studies are not enough and comprehensive. The traditional emphatic attitude to practice and neglect of theories had a long influence on business letter translation studies .but as a matter of fact, in spite of a large amount of practices , the theoretical study in this field is still not perfect. It faces many many and complex problems that cannot be solved by means of present prescriptive Chinese translation theories .presently, studies on business letter are in ascendant. The thesis is designed to discuss the linguistic feature about English business letter and translation techniques with Skopostheory. the purpose of business letter is communication in the aim of gaining profit ,many factors influence people’s behavior while communicating with business letter The Skopostheory provides directive function to translating practice. Shirley Taylor,Communication for Business(1993):This book help readers to develop confidence and expertise in composing effective business communications. With the development of China’s foreign trade and the constant increase of other economic activities, business communication has attracted more attention in China. One of the most effective tools of business communication is business letter. Business correspondence serves to pass information ,to express ideas, to exchange feelings and to deal with business transactions and helps to make and maintain good relationship with customers. It acts as, in a way, a bridge between the writer and the reader. The good relationship between the two parties and successful conclusion of the deals greatly depends on business letter,which leads to the exploration of its language features and writing skills is helpful in improving the quality and efficiency 7

of business communication. In recent years, a considerable number of scholars have done researches on business letter from semantic,syntax and pragmatic aspects.Moreover, some scholars have explored the writing formating of business letter. Nevertheless, the study of the author has revealed that few scholars have combined it with the economy principle, a theory first put forward in the explore the new possibilities in this field, the present study applies the economy principle to the linguistic analysis of the business business letter. Thesis statement From the studies at home and abroad, few studies about the translation of English business letter which is based on Skopostheory has been made in recent years. So it is worth the study of this paper under the title of “Linguistic Features and Translation Techniques of English Business Letter”. This paper intends to cover five parts as follows: introduction, literature review, Linguistic Features of business letter , Translation Techniques and conclusion. The third is the theoretic base which provides a theoretic base for the whole paper. The fourth part is the analysis of Translation Techniques of English business letter and the examples. The last part concludes that Skopostheory has a great influence on English business letter translation. The application of Skopostheory in the translation can help students 8

From this aspect, it’s necessary to do research on it. Second, The translation of English business letter makes a significant role in international trade. While applying Skopostheory into the research on translation , more benefits will be achieved. (2) The main content of the paper is as follows: This paper intends to cover five parts as follows: introduction, literature review, Linguistic Features of business letter , Translation Techniques and conclusion. The third is the theoretic base which provides a theoretic base for the whole paper. The fourth part is the analysis of Translation Techniques of English business letter and the examples.
